The Palace of Parliament. Bucharest by Night

Night shot in the center of Bucharest, Romania, April 2010.

“The People’s House”, the second largest building in the world (after the Pentagon) was built before 1989 by the former dictator, Nicolae Ceausescu. Officially it was named “The House of the Republic” (Casa Republicii) but many Romanians called it “The People’s House”. Now it is a multi-purpose building and it’s officially called “The Palace of Parliament” because it contains both chambers of the Romanian Parliament.

The building measures 270 meters by 240 meters. It is 86 meters high, and has a depth of 92 meters under ground. It has 1,100 rooms, a couple of parking garages and is 12 stories tall. The structure combines architectural elements and different motifs from different styles. It has a neoclassical architectonic style.
